The 10 Best-Ever Anxiety Management Techniques

October 8, 2015

People experience anxiety in different ways, all of which can become debilitating. Although anxiety is a normal human emotion, it can run out of control and become ruminative worry that ruins the capacity for joy. Another type of anxiety is panic, the type that can fill people with terror and put them on the alert to avert any possible chance of another ‘attack’. Social fears keep people from fulfilling their potential and from fully participating in life. These three major categories of anxiety are life changing — and they can be changed!

Psychotherapists can help people learn to control their symptoms to become free from the negative effects that every anxiety disorder has on their lives, emotions, thoughts and actions. A brief discussion of brain structure and function will help counselors to know how and why the techniques are so important. You will be able to tell your clients how using their brain can change their anxious brain, to modify or even eliminate symptoms for full recovery.

In this workshop, participants will learn 10 methods that will help clients of all ages and backgrounds to calm their minds and diminish physical, cognitive, and behavioural symptoms of anxiety. Dr. Wehrenberg will present methods that really work to eliminate panic, generalized anxiety, and social anxiety disorder. She will show you how to help your clients take control of their worry, eliminate panic and re-engage in their social worlds. Participants will leave this workshop ready to apply effective methods to provide prompt, effective relief of symptoms.

Objectives for Professionals

  • Know how to distinguish anxiety from other symptoms in children and adults with ADHD or mild Autism Spectrum Disorder so appropriate methods are utilized in all situations.
  • Plan interventions that manage negative physical arousal in all types of anxiety, focusing on lifestyle.
  • Be able to identify panic triggers and desensitize them to avert panic attacks
  • Learn and apply the important research on memory reconsolidation as it affects development of social anxiety and re-engaging in social environments.
  • Use specific powerful techniques to stop the rumination of the worried brain that marks generalized anxiety disorder
  • Effectively resolve perfectionism and excessive activity as means to control anxiety in highly active people.
  • Apply principles of defeating fear and change inner dialogue that drives avoidance to create positive change for people with social anxiety disorder

The 10 Best-Ever Depression Management Techniques

October 9, 2015

Depression is a broad term that describes varied and at times contradictory symptoms. There are multiple causes for depression and varied symptom constellations, all of which affect the treatment approach for what appear to be different kinds of depressions.

Understanding the origin of your clients’ depressions, and psychotherapists want to use their skills to resolve and eliminate underlying causes. We know those causes have an impact on treatment, so understanding them can make a big difference to your success in therapy. Dr. Wehrenberg will describe her view of four common origins of depression and their impact symptom expression and on recovery.

However, the primary aim of this seminar is identifying the impact of causes on the expression of symptoms and quickly moving to management of symptoms, and then addressing how we move to recovery (without medication) from this insidious disorder.

This pragmatic seminar will focus on exploring psychotherapy methods that can improve the physiology, cognition, and behaviour of depressed clients. With a lively combination of lecture, experiential techniques and discussion, you will learn 10 categories of interventions that you can immediately apply to diminish symptoms in clients suffering depression. The workshop will highlight aspects of brain function that underlie depression and will focus on treatment methods that will counteract depressive symptoms.

Objectives for Professionals:

You will learn —

  • Practical methods to enhance motivation and mobilize the client with lethargy and low sense of reward
  • How to change the negative cognitions, with attention to changing the impact of the brain’s neural networking on negative memories
  • Techniques to build the brain circuitry for joy and positive emotions
  • How to stop the damage of chronic stress (a major cause of depression!) and end the isolation of workaholism and burnout
  • Interventions to stop the plunge to despair common to the depression of trauma survivors and how to interrupt self-destructive coping styles
  • How to reset the default mode of the hopeless/helpless pessimistic style of depressed thinking so familiar to those who have suffered depression for much of their lives
