Mindfulness-based Trauma Therapy for Older Adolescents and Adults

This workshop describes the application of empirically-validated mindfulness principles and techniques to the treatment of traumatized older adolescents and adults. It also integrates aspects of Buddhist psychology that inform the existential aspects of recovery from extremely adverse events. Topics include clinical and theoretical implications of the “pain paradox,” using mindfulness to facilitate exposure and other aspects of emotional processing, teaching metacognitive awareness, “trigger work,” “urge surfing,” contraindications for mindfulness, and a new hybrid approach to balancing classical trauma treatment with mindfulness training.

Objectives for Professionals

Attendees will be able to:

1. Describe the pain paradox as it relates to avoidance and symptom chronicity

2. Define metacognitive awareness and its benefits

3. Describe “urge surfing” and “trigger work” as it relates to affect regulation training

4. Outline the major principles of Brière’s hybrid model of mindfulness-based trauma therapy

Certificate of Participation is given at the end of the workshop.
