Some of the most difficult cases that judges, lawyers, evaluators, and therapists face are those post-separation cases in which one or more of the children resist contact with or completely reject a parent. These cases drain the court’s, the community’s, and the parent’s resources. What’s the missing piece?

This workshop will provide some of the answers, practical tools, and research informed ways to assess and intervene with these families sooner rather than later – to get the children the help they need before the problems become entrenched.

Objectives for Professionals

Participants will be able to

  1. Describe the research on shared parenting, the parents’ decision-making processes and factors to consider in preparing a parenting plan.
  2. Set forth means to prepare for and evaluate a child custody and / or parenting plan assessment.
  3. Define (with examples) abuse vs. estrangement and the different kinds of gatekeeping seen in high conflict families.
  4. Describe options for client interventions for families in which a child resists contact with or rejects a parent.
  5. Differentiate cases in which graduated parenting plans may be useful and those in which such plans are not appropriate.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE

  1. Getting the Big Picture: Characteristics of an optimal parenting plan; Using decision trees to assess the critical elements in the family
  2. Addressing special needs within parenting plans: domestic violence, child abuse, non-traditional family units
  3. Gatekeeping and Alienation: Are these the same thing in different clothing?
    • Options for Interventions:  Interventions for children; parenting and co-parenting; graduated parenting plans
  4. Practical evidenced informed interventions for legal and mental health professionals to address child resistance and parent rejection
    • Accountability: Measures of success and the importance of follow-up
